「Shape New World」——このタイトルはアメリカで最も読まれているディストピア小説として並ぶ『すばらしい新世界（Brave New World）』から名付けたものです。
そういったディストピアの未来を構成するテクノロジーや社会システムは、いずれも生まれた時々には優れたものとして迎えられてきたのだろうと感じさせられるものばかりです。無防備に生きていれば私たちも到達しかねない未来であると感じさせます。
そんな不幸な未来の到来を防ぐにはどうしたらいいのでしょうか？私たちにできることは、目指すべき未来を自ら選んで進んでいくことだと考えます。無策に山中を歩き回っていては遭難してしまいますが、きちんと登るべき山を選び、地図を描き、コンパスを持って進めば登り切ることができるはずです。この「Shape New World」の取り組みが目指すのは、そんな未来へのロードマップを描いて、実際に行動していくということです。
そんな問題意識のなか、Global Shapers Communityの大阪ハブのシェイパーである佐久間洋司と日本国際博覧会協会の石川勝プロデューサーの対話から、2025年大阪・関西万博の機会にこのような未来、特に2050年の未来への議論を深めていくことを目指して「Shape New World」の取り組みが始まりました。
現在では、この取り組みを統括するイニシアティブ（Shape New World Initiative）が新設されており、大阪大学社会ソリューションイニシアティブと科学技術振興機構のコラボレーションによる未来社会デザインに係る調査研究（Shape New World Project）や、大阪商工会議所のご協力のもと東京、横浜、京都、大阪、福岡、沖縄の全国のシェイパーらが参加する未来社会創成委員会（Shape New World Committee）を含む、様々な取り組みを推進しています。大阪ハブのシェイパーからは、代表の佐久間洋司、神薗善規、小松詩織、坂野晶、山東晃大、角田弥央、南綾香、松本宙ら8名がShape New World Initiativeに参加しています。また、過去には小林祐美、鶴羽愛里、若林佳祐らも大阪ハブにおけるShape New Worldの取り組みに参加していました。
来年、2025年4月13日（日）〜10月13日（月）の184日間にわたって開催される2025年日本国際博覧会（2025年大阪・関西万博）では、世界中のリーダーや有識者が半年間にわたり同じ場所に集う万博の特性を活かした事業であるテーマウィーク事業が実施されます。地球的規模の課題の解決に向けて英知を持ち寄り、対話による解決策を探り、いのち輝く未来社会を世界と共に創造することを⽬的として行われるものです。このうち、主催者プログラムである「アジェンダ2025」について、Shape New World Initiativeが次世代・インクルージョンのクロスカッティングイニシアチブとして合計24セッションの企画と運営を担当します。主な事務局として佐久間ら大阪ハブのシェイパー、日本全国のシェイパーが企画運営をリードしています。
The title ‘Shape New World’ is taken from the title of the most widely read dystopian novel in the United States, ‘Brave New World’.
The technologies and social systems that make up such a dystopian future are all things that, when they were first created, must have been hailed as excellent. They make us feel that this is a future that we could reach if we lived without protection.
How can we prevent such an undesirable future from coming? I think that what we can do is to choose the future we want to aim for and move forward. If you wander around aimlessly in the mountains, you will get lost, but if you choose the right mountain to climb, draw a map, and carry a compass, you should be able to make it to the top. The aim of the ‘Shape New World’ movement is to draw a roadmap for such a future and then actually take action.
With this kind of awareness of the issues, the Shape New World movement began with a dialogue between Hiroshi Sakuma, a Shaper at the Osaka Hub of the Global Shapers Community, and Masaru Ishikawa, a producer at the Japan International Exposition Association, with the aim of deepening discussions on this kind of future, and in particular the future of 2050, on the occasion of the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025.
An initiative (the Shape New World Initiative) has now been established to oversee this movement, and various projects are being carried out, including the Shape New World Project, a survey and research project on the design of future societies carried out in collaboration between the Osaka University Social Solutions Initiative and the Japan Science and Technology Agency, and the Shape New World Committee, a committee for the creation of future societies that includes Shapers from all over the Japan, including Tokyo, Yokohama, Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka and Okinawa, and is being carried out with the cooperation of the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Eight members of the Osaka Hub Shapers are participating in the Shape New World Initiative, including head representatives Hiroshi Sakuma, Yoshinori Kamizono, Shiori Komatsu, Akira Sakano, Akihiro Sando, Mio Tsunoda, Ayaka Minami, and Sora Matsumoto. In the past, Yumi Kobayashi, Eri Tsuruha, and Keisuke Wakabayashi also participated in efforts for Shape New World at the Osaka Hub.
The 2025 Japan International Exposition (Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025), which will be held over 184 days from Sunday 13 April to Monday 13 October 2025, will feature a series of theme weeks, which will make the most of the Expo’s unique characteristic of bringing together leaders and experts from around the world in the same place for six months. The aim is to bring together wisdom to solve global-scale issues, explore solutions through dialogue, and create a future society where life shines with the world. Of these, the Shape New World Initiative is responsible for planning and managing a total of 24 sessions for the Agenda 2025 programme, which is organised by the initiative as a cross-cutting initiative for the next generation and inclusion. The main office is led by Shapers from the Osaka Hub, including Sakuma, and Shapers from across Japan.
